Barack Obama has already had an influence on fashion and while some have used his sartorial style or his image as a touchstone perhaps none have done so as flamboyantly as Jean Charles de Castelbajac. The showpiece of his most recent runway show was a bright yellow dress that features a sequinned image of Obama. The short dress was part of a colorful line with dresses emblazoned with clouds, superhero insignia and beauty queen faces in tiaras complete with flowing hair. In The Telgegraph de Castelbajac calls Obama, the most charismatic leader in politics today.

As part of Jimm Lasser’s The Dunk on McCain exhibition which opened last night at the Tyson Space, the marquee piece was a specially created Obama Force One. The half-art piece, half sneaker features a unique sole which bears two different designs. The left shoe bears the statement ” A black man runs, the nation is behind him” while the right shoe features a shot of Barack Obama. The opening night included special prints created with the shoe soles for sale.

For 686 founder and creative director Michael Akira West, throughout his inaugural collections till now, he always always sought to convey messages and themes for each season. However, new for 2008 he looks to create installations which find relation in 686’s most prized asset, their outerwear jackets. The ultimate goal is to use common items to create and inspire a series of jackets. Within Installation 1, Nathan Sayawa and his talents as a Lego artist are put to use to create an installation based off of 686’s Smarty Complete 2.5 Ply jacket. This is based off of Mike’s personal childhood interests in science and chemistry. Secondly is the Nautical Flags installation based on several dozen International Code Flags which was led to create a special interpretation of the womens Smarty Admiral jacket. Each flag was de-constructed into patchwork and then treated for performance properties and then constructed once again. The inspiration behind this piece was the global unities of water which is at the core of winter and summer technical apparels.

swedish illustrator/ designer Olle Hemmendorff was commissioned, together with 7 other creatives (patrik söderstam, hanna wieslander, marguerite seger, jonas wiehager and fredrik skogkvistby) by nike to interpret a nike sportswear icon. hemmendorff created a burger sculpture of nike’s ‘air max 90′. ‘in the tradition of material innovation of AM 90, I constructed a running shoe using the most powerful,must durable and most delicious material known to man: hamburger.’ OH the 8 artworks will be shown at the 1912 space inside sneakers ‘n’ stuff, stockholm for the next two months.
